Math Journaling and another Fun Game Freebie!

Ok...so back to work tomorrow.  sniffles  I plan to go and deliver textbooks don't be jealous, you know that is the best part of my job  hahaha.

I finished staff development and for those following me on my analysis of the toilet paper data collection.  I told you I was gonna take a pic so you can see what I'm talking about.

So everytime I went in the restroom, I was curious about why each one was so different, because I "think" most folks are pretty consistent and predictable.  But the more I thought about it, the more questions plagued my brain.  Does it have to do with what roll is already started?  because starting a new roll can be a pain.  Or do the employees replace on the right side and that makes it use all the rolls equally?  See...in this picture - why would the 1st one be most used, it's the farthest away.  Ok...I will stop sharing my oddness.

Math Journaling

So we decorated our math journals!  I wanted to show some interesting designs the kids come up with, but every year all the kids take them so I have none...just my example.  I like for my students to put an envelop on the front inside cover to keep foldables and other essentials we do.

I start the year off with practicing a  multiplication table sounds very boring I know, but I teach my kids lots of ways to use the chart to help with many skills, finding common multiplies/factors, square numbers, etc.  We practice using a blank one and filling it in daily for the first few weeks.  I show my students how to do it in a pattern so that it's not overwhelming to them.  Many of them don't realize they don't have to memorize all of them.  Here's the pattern.
So...I use my specific table because I highlight the square numbers to start.  I do take the yellow away after some time, but it helps my kids learn the pattern.

Once we learn about prime and composite, we color our prime numbers (pink).  The color key is at the top.

If you want a copy of my multiplication table, I'll be glad to email it to you.  It does have the square numbers highlighted.  Just leave a comment and I'll send it your way.

Fun Game Freebie!

This game focuses on building number sense.  There are two game boards included, primary and intermediate (upper grades).  The students roll di/dice and attempt to make any of the four numbers using any operation (lower grades use addition).  If they cannot make any number, they skip that turn.  The winner is the student who reaches the star first.

This is a game that I rotate in centers all year since they enjoy it so much.  Click on the image and go get your FREE copy now!

Enjoy your week!

  1. What a great way to teach prime numbers!! I am not teaching this year; however, this will definitely be something I use to help my son who really struggles in this area.

    Thank you for the tip!!

    1. I always thought it helped to see why those are prime since it's an abstract concept.
